本属蚂蚁大多数种类工蚁多型,主要分布于古北区、东洋区和非洲热带地区。它们以可以把收获来的种子分类存放而闻名。同时它们收集种子的工作也促进了某些种子植物的传播

This genus is first described by A. Forel in 1890,the model is Formica barbara Linnaeus,1767 .
Messor cephalotes is the largest species in size in this genus.
There is only one specise in China, it is Messor aciculatus Smith .Messor aciculatus is a prevalence species in northwest waste desert of China.Works of Messor aciculatus collect more than 10 kinds of plants' seeds in the waste desert.
本属蚂蚁属于大头蚁族,大约80种,主要生活于草原、干燥地区或人类居住的村落附近,获取植物种子、谷物。

http://lioroux.free.fr/nouvphoto341.htm)。 最大的收获蚁种是Messor cephalotes Emery,1895 它们生活在肯尼亚的大草原。工蚁体长 : 6.5 - 18 mm; 蚁后体长 : 18 - 18.7 mm;大型工蚁的头宽5.6mm。
中国仅针毛收获蚁,Messor aciculatus Smith,一种,工蚁体长5.4-
5.6mm,单型,体黑色,上颚、触角鞭节、足红褐色,后腹部带褐色。体具教丰富的白色毛,针状。分布北京、河北、内蒙古、山西、山东、上海、江苏、浙江、安徽、福建、湖南、湖北、陕西以及日本。

http://ant.edb.miyakyo-u.ac.jp/E/Taxo/F40501.html) 针毛收获蚁在我国西北荒漠属于优势物种,该种在我国收获和取食十余种荒漠植物的种子,部分一年生草本植物的种子收获可达年产量的近100%。单巢口,自然巢穴深80-137厘米,延主隧道有水平延伸的各巢室,巢向四周的延伸范围随深度减小(长有德、贺达汉,2002)。蚁后年产卵4-6次,每次60-120粒(长有德、贺达汉、李秋霞,1999)。
